Final Thoughts: Blockchain and Banking Recap

Previous: What’s Next for Blockchain? The Research Frontier

And that’s a wrap! We’ve spent the last 12 days diving deep into Blockchain and Banking by Pierluigi Martino. This book really changed how I think about the money in my pocket (and on my screen).

If you missed any of the posts, here are the three big things you need to know:

1. It’s not just about Bitcoin

While Bitcoin started the revolution, the real power of blockchain for banks is in private, permissioned ledgers. This is the “boring” part of tech that makes everything from mortgages to international shipping faster and cheaper.

2. Banks are in a race for survival

Fintech startups are already using blockchain to offer better deals on loans and payments. Banks have a choice: adapt and use the tech themselves, or watch 80% of their business disappear by 2030. Most of the big banks are already betting big on the tech to stay alive.

3. Regulation is the final hurdle

We have the tech, and we have the business models. What we don’t have yet is a clear, global set of rules. Until we figure out how smart contracts work in a real court and how to balance privacy with security, blockchain will stay in the “testing” phase for most big banks.

My Overall Impression

Martino’s book is a great reality check. It cuts through the “crypto-bro” hype and looks at the actual plumbing of the financial system. It’s not always easy reading, but it’s essential if you want to know where banking is heading.

What should you do?

You don’t need to become a blockchain developer. But you should stay informed. The way you pay for things, borrow money, and even prove who you are is going to change radically in the next few years.

Thanks for joining me on this journey! If you have any thoughts on the series, let me know.
